Promise of 2Mb Not Sufficient – States CRC Report

According to the report, ‘Mind the Gap – Digital England, a rural perspective’ brought out by the Commission for rural communities, the UK govt’s assurance regarding 2Mb broadband service is not sufficient, and more needs to be done to make faster broadband accessible to the rural areas.

The report recommends for certain specific steps to be taken in order to the help the rural people come out of the broadband backwardness. It also suggests for the introduction of various community based broadband programmes.

Presently, there are about 40 such community broadband programmes across the UK and The Independent Networks Co-operative Association is in charge of the overall functioning. To keep up-to-date with the latest broadband news, refer to broadbandgenie, they also offer really good broadband advice, so you’ll always know you’re getting the best broadband service for you in your area.

The Commission alerts the govt about the inadequacy of its assurance of making available 2Mb broadband services throughout UK by 2012, as they feel that the mere assurance would only make people think that the work is complete but in reality a lot remains to be done.

Levying a monthly amount of 50p as Broadband Tax was one of the recommendations put forward by the Digital Britain in order to raise the funds for a better infrastructure. However, the suggestion is still facing with a lot of oppositions from various sections including the CRC which is apprehensive about its adequacy.
