The Blackstone Group was set up by Stephen A. Schwarzman and his partner Peter Peterson as a business providing financial advice and private equity. Today, the Blackstone Group is a household name enompassing holdings as different as, for example, Allied Waste and Nalco.
Stephen grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Subsequent to graduating high school Stephen decided on undergraduate study at Yale University. He undertook an Master’s degree in Business Administration at the widely respected Harvard Business school near Boston, Massachusetts. Then Stephen began his career in earnest at Lehman Brothers investment bank, situated in New York, NY. By his 32nd birthday, he was already a managing director.
Not only does Stephen give his time and money to a broad range of not for profit organizations, but he has also volunteered as a non-faculty professor at Yale. To name another example of his engagement, he is Chairman to the Board of Trustees of the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. In addition, he announced on March 11th, 2008 that he had gifted 100 million dollars to the New York Public Library to assist their building project. He is also one of the trustees of the library.
