BT Charged with Negligent Attitude towards Illegal File Sharing

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has obtained detailed information regarding BT subscribers of illegally downloading files using peer-to-peer applications, based on which it has charged BT with adopting a callous attitude towards the issue. Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the BPI, has called this attitude of BT reprehensible and has categorically stated that all businesses providing such services should consider it their primary duty to prevent their networks from being used for illegal activities. The fact that BT is not punishing such wrongdoers actually amounts to its acquiescence in file sharing, he added.

A BT spokesperson on the other hand stated that it is not actually possible to monitor all file sharing activities, as this will amount to infringement of privacy of the user and cause other problems. Further, the spokesperson added that it is wrong to assume that all peer-to-peer applications are used for illegal activities, because some are required for playing online games such as World of Warcraft.

A spokesperson of the company, while talking to Your Money Government, stated recently that if BT were to adopt strict monitoring techniques to prevent illegal file sharing, then the resultant cost would force the company to an increase the customer’s bill by £24 annually.

The BPI has accused BT of allowing nearly 100,000 unlawful users to misuse its network for illegal downloading and has even collected the IP addresses of these users. It has added that the necessary steps to prevent online privacy is the price a company pays for remaining in business.
