Go for the Gut Shot
An old adage in poker says “never bet and draw to an inside straight” – one of four cards that can complete your straight. For instance, you’re holding A-Q with J-10 on board. A King will complete your inside straight – or gut shot draw as it is sometimes known.
The odds against hitting the gut shot are long – about 11-1, or 16 percent on the turn and only 8 percent on the river. But certain factors sometimes do come into play that make your call to a gut shot draw correct.
Go for the gut shot when:
* Your gut shot will produce the absolute nuts that can’t be beat. Do not call however if it only makes a low straight that might be beat by a higher one. For instance, you’re holding A-K with J-10 on board – the Queen gives you the highest straight. But when you are holding 10-9 with a K-Q on board, the Jack you want could complete a higher straight for someone holding A-10.
* If your poker online opponent is a player who won’t lay down a hand and always calls on the river, then go for it.
* Only go for the gut shot if your opponent has plenty of chips to call with if you hit and raise. You want to be paid off big time.
* When it’s a big family pot (and remember you are only drawing if your hand makes the absolute nuts), then a cheap bet is worth calling.
Remember this when you playpoker online.
