Need to Take Precautions against Accidents Caused by Slipping

Mace & Jones, a North West law firm, has cautioned businesses that there is a need to take precaution against accidents that can be caused by slipping due to snow, ice or frost in order to prevent work-related injury claims by staff.

Jeremy Bradshaw, a Mace & Jones personal injury lawyer, has said that nearly 30% of workplace injuries are caused by falling. He pointed out that last year, more than 10,000 major accidents and around 23,000 minor accidents were caused by such falls that led to three or more days of leaves.

Bradshaw has pointed out that it will benefit everyone is safety measures are followed. He has also suggested various safety measures to help prevent workplace slips and trips that should be incorporated.

Firstly, more attention is needed for more dangerous areas such as stairs and sloppy paths. Secondly, attention should be directed towards preventing falls when persons step into polished floors of office buildings with shoes used in snow or water.

Thirdly, snow and ice in parking areas should be decreased by using salt or grit. Fourthly, absorbent mats should be put near the doors to absorb water from the footwear of people. These mats should be checked frequently in order to ensure that they are not too wet, so that they can collect excess water.

Bradshaw strongly advises businesses to maintain careful records that will show that these safety measures have been adopted and are being maintained. Without appropriate records, it will not be possible for the businesses or building managers to prove before the court that the safety measures were adhered to, and this would result in imposition of heavy fines if compensation claims are brought by parties.
