Threatening Tube Worker with Glass Bottle Results in Imprisonment for Man
In a recent incident of racial aggravation, a man has been handed a sentence of six weeks imprisonment for having made racial remarks and threatening a tube worker with a glass bottle. The accused brandished the bottle and said he would break it against the worker’s face.
The case was heard by Brent Magistrates’ Court. At the hearing, Teisutis Macius admitted he was guilty as charged of racial aggression and assault. The court sentenced him to five weeks in prison for the offence and another week for having failed to be present for an earlier court proceeding. He was also asked to pay a compensation of £100 to the victim.
The incident leading to prosecution took place after midnight at the Wembley Park Tube station, when a staff member found Macius in a drunken state and asked him to leave. Macius refused to leave and started abusing the staff member. He made racial comments and threatened to hit the staff member with a glass bottle that he was holding in his hand.
The British Transport Police (BTP) officers were immediately called and the accused was arrested.
The BTP officer investigating the case, Miguel Orjales expressed his concern for the victim, who must have been intimidated and traumatised by the assault. He expressed his relief that the victim was not hurt and said that the sentence meted out must have satisfied the abused tube worker.
The manager of London Underground’s Workplace Violence Unit, Aidan Harris, said that Macius’ behaviour was completely unwarranted and such behaviour will not be acceptable at any cost. He also added that the sentence would serve as a reminder to the public that any kind of assault against their staff members would not be tolerated.
